Martha Nussbaum denounces a crisis in education. Somehow humanities have been left aside and technical education has taken the main role. With this change came a change regarding the purpose of education itself. Now education is mainly seen as a tool to reach a certain goal or personal mark, no more, no lees. This way of seeing education overlooks the important link between education and action. We act accordingly with what we know. We interact with others and behave in a certain way because of our beliefs, of what we have learned and inherited from our families and teachers. Thus, education helps us, in a very essential way, to become who we are. A crisis in education implies, then, a crisis in human relations. Selfishness, violence, disregard for the others, corruption, are attitudes we have accustomed to see every day. What are we to do to prevent all this? What needs to be changed in order to make of human beings social, caring, compassionate, sensible creatures? These are the questions this course is concerned with. We will focus on the social function of education. On how education can enrich our moral sentiments, help us recognize and acknowledge others as autonomous, free, and dignified human beings. In doing so, we will study different educational models aimed at reaching this social function, and we¿ll analyze which of those models could be realistically applicable in our contemporary society.
