Many have hailed globalization as the cornerstone of contemporary life; one that brings together the economic, social, and cultural experience of millions of people around the globe in into an increasingly interconnected sphere of social action. The flow of capital, information, and populations seems to exceed the boundaries of the Nation State, challenging national borders, economic regulations and, in general, the geographic and symbolic range of cultural representations. Interconnectedness, however, has not meant a more equal distribution of resources, free movement for all, or a decrease of conflict and violence around the world. Local struggles are now fought in the global arena and transnational corporate interests shape social policy at every turn. This course explores the genesis, articulation and implementation of the term ¿globalization¿ from an interdisciplinary perspective in the social sciences. We will review the history, anthropology, and sociology of globalization focusing on some of the most important aspects of this process and the social theories that have been forth in its analysis.
