The course concerns both theoretical and practical knowledge of the use of the language and of the principles that govern it within different social and cultural groups. It explores the relationship between language and society in which social factors (as age, gender, level of schooling, place of origin, among others) determining the linguistic choices of speakers are questioned. In this sense, studying this relationship involves addressing linguistic variations, linguistic attitudes and linguistic policies, as well as understanding the ways in which language and languages are transformed, renewed and projected as related to social changes. In short, this course aims at contributing to the development of a critical conscience in the face of social and cultural phenomena related to language.
